Role today

Beslan is the only airport of North Ossetia–Alania, serving Vladikavkaz, and is run by Vladikavkaz International Airport, part of the Novaport group; it handled 566,000 passengers in 2019. [2] The sources consulted describe no based military flying unit.

History

The airport dates its founding to 1936, when Po-2 passenger flights began to Rostov-on-Don and Astrakhan. [2] A modern airport complex, with an instrument landing system and new surveillance and precision approach radars, was begun in 1979. [2] The runway was rebuilt from June 2014, and the airport was closed to all flights from 14 September to 2 December 2014 while the centre of the runway was resurfaced. [2]

The airfield

A single runway, 09/27, 3,000 m long and 45 m wide, with two taxiways and stands for up to 15 aircraft. [1] [2]
