Record revision 1 · Georgia's second airport, the former Soviet Kopitnari airfield of ground-attack, fighter and Su-24 bomber regiments.
A real-world airfield as described in public sources, and how sim maps represent it. Units, facilities and names change; each is dated where the sources allow, and the charts are not for navigation. Use current official publications for flight planning.

Role today
Kutaisi is Georgia’s second-busiest airport, with 1.7 million passengers in 2024, run by the state-owned United Airports of Georgia and built up around low-cost airlines, Wizz Air above all. [1] It lies beside the main road between Kutaisi and Batumi, and since 2022 trains between Tbilisi and Batumi stop at the nearby Kopitnari station. [1]
History
Before it was a civil airport it was Kopitnari, a Soviet military airfield. [2] The 166th Guards Ground-Attack Regiment flew Il-10s from it from 1947 until April 1954. [2] From 1960 the Air Defence Forces’ 167th Guards Fighter Regiment was based there with MiG-17s and Su-9s until it was disbanded in 1976, and from 1961 the 143rd Bomber Regiment flew Il-28s, then Yak-28s from 1966 and Su-24Ms, until it was withdrawn to Morozovsk in Russia in 1993. [2]
The airport closed for rebuilding in November 2011 and reopened on 27 September 2012, with Wizz Air flying in from Kyiv on the first day; in February 2016 Wizz Air announced a base there. [1] [2]
The airfield
One runway, 07/25, 2,500 m long and paved in asphalt. [1]
