Role today
Aleppo International is a secondary hub for Syrian Air. [1] The first commercial flight since the fall of the Assad government landed there on 18 March 2025, and the terminal has been refurbished with Qatari help since the war. [1]
History
The airport dates back to the French Mandate; KLM’s first flight from Amsterdam to Batavia came through it in 1924. [1] Its current terminal opened in 1999. [1]
The civil war shut it in January 2013, with flights suspended from December 2012; it reopened briefly on 22 January 2014 and properly only on 19 February 2020, after the government retook eastern Aleppo. [1] On 1 March 2020 Turkish drones and artillery struck it during Operation Spring Shield. [1] Israel then hit it repeatedly, saying it was targeting Iranian weapons transfers: strikes in September 2022 and through 2023 damaged the runway and closed the airport several times, and a strike on 1 May 2023 on an ammunition depot at the military airport killed a Syrian soldier. [1]
On 30 November 2024, as government forces withdrew from Aleppo, the Syrian Democratic Forces took the airport, followed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters, who captured ten military aircraft there. [1]
The airfield
One asphalt runway, 09/27, 3,110 m long. [1]
