Role today
Kish International is the entry point for the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit Kish Island, and foreigners arriving from abroad get 14 days’ visa-free entry under a scheme separate from mainland Iran’s. [1] It hosts the biennial Iran Kish Air Show. [1] In March 2026, during the Iran war, Iran International reported a military strike on the airport. [1]
History
Before the 1979 revolution Iran had ordered two Concordes for Kish–Paris and Kish–London routes, and the airport was designed to handle them. [1] In the 1980s the Kish Free Zone Organisation offered visa-free travel and tax breaks to compete with Dubai, but the plan failed and the island became mainly a resort for Iranians. [1] In 2015, 2.7 million passengers used the airport. [1]
The airfield
Two parallel asphalt runways, 09L/27R and 09R/27L, each 3,659 m long. [1] Source 2 lists 09L/27R as closed. [2]
